Dress is important when you go for an assessment day as your appearance will be noted by the interviewers and it could impact their perception of you. The level of formality will depend on the type of job you are applying for but generally, smart casual clothing is acceptable for most jobs.
When you’re invited to an assessment centre, you should try to dress professionally and comfortably. The dress code at these events is usually relaxed, but it’s always a good idea to err on the side of caution.
Dress for the occasion. If you’re attending an assessment day for a job that requires you to operate heavy machinery or use protective equipment, wear clothing that will allow you freedom of movement and keep you safe from injury. This may mean wearing steel-toed boots, safety glasses and a hard hat.
However, if the event is being held in an office environment, it’s okay to dress more casually — just make sure your outfit looks professional and clean. Avoid wearing jeans or sneakers unless they are part of your official uniform at work.
How to dress for an assessment centre
For men: Jackets should be worn if possible; however, if this isn’t appropriate then make sure your shirt has sleeves at least halfway down your forearm (if not longer). Ties are not required but feel free to wear one if desired. Slacks should be dark grey or black in color with no rips or tears in them; khakis are acceptable as long as they fit well and aren’t too baggy around.

It’s important that you don’t wear clothing that is too tight, or too lose. You need to make sure that your clothes fit properly and aren’t too baggy or too tight. Make sure they’re ironed and clean!
- Don’t wear anything too revealing
You don’t want people judging you because of what you’re wearing (or not wearing). Be careful not to show too much cleavage or any other bits of flesh that might distract someone from paying attention to your skills! Also, avoid wearing anything with offensive slogans or pictures (this goes both ways).
- Wear flat shoes / no heels if possible!
Heels can be uncomfortable when you’re sitting down for long periods of time at an assessment centre; flats are much better!
What is the dress code?
Is there a dress code? The assessment centre may be held at a hotel or other venue where there is no formal dress code. Or it may be held in an office setting where everyone wears business casual or professional attire. If there’s not a specific dress code, it’s best to err on the side of caution and dress professionally.
What to wear to an assessment day
You’ll usually be asked what time you’d like to arrive and how long you’d like to spend at the centre. You should allow enough time for travel, parking and any other admin that needs doing before your assessment starts (this may include registering or getting changed).

If you’re attending a test centre, wear something comfortable that won’t distract you from your work. A shirt with a pocket protector or a pair of glasses would be considered distracting, so avoid these items.

If you’re attending a group exercise, it’s best to wear something comfortable that won’t restrict movement or restrict others’ movement around you. Wearing a suit might be impractical here since it could restrict your movements during the exercise.
