Personal life

Pnina Tornai is the eldest of four daughters born to Sephardic Jewish parents Shaul and Ruth Assis and took her first breath in Ramat HaSharon, Israel. Tornai was given the name Pearl by her grandmother. Pearl is the Hebrew word for Pnina, so that’s what everyone called her. Her father was an Israeli diplomat from Alexandria, Egypt, and her mother was from Tangier, Morocco. Tornai always wanted to be an actress, but she ended up graduating from high school. She completed her education and immediately enlisted in the Israeli military. After serving her country, Tornai made the decision to attend an acting school in Paris, France. In that country, she met her future husband and had her son, David.

She has also appeared on Say Yes to the Dress numerous times throughout the past decade, both as a guest expert and in her own specials. Tornai has starred in a number of international TV shows, including 10 Years Younger. She has also made appearances on VH1 and What Would You Do? on the ABC News network.

In 2009, Tornai participated in the Israeli edition of Big Brother VIP. In 2015, she competed in the reality cooking competition MasterChef VIP, proving her skills in the kitchen. Tornai enjoys hosting parties, gardening, and collecting vintage couture clothing, all of which became interests during her decade spent in Paris.

Career

Tornai and her son went back to Israel after her time in Paris were over. With just one seamstress for the company, she opened a modest Tel Aviv shop. The two started making dresses for both day and night. In 1992, Tornai started making wedding dresses after a customer requested one based on an evening gown she had seen in the store. Tornai took up the challenge, and his photograph of the couple’s wedding appeared on the front page of an Israeli newspaper. Tornai’s career took off after other brides saw the photo and asked if she could make a similar dress for them. Tornai has transformed her shop into a bridal boutique.

When Tornai first showed her dresses to Kleinfeld Bridal in 2005, the prestigious bridal shop initially turned them down because they were deemed too risqué.

Tornai kept at it, making minor adjustments to her outfits before coming back later. When she got back, people were so impressed by one of her dresses that Kleinfeld hired her on the spot as one of their wedding dress designers. Then, an in-store bridal boutique dedicated to Pnina Tornai’s designs was unveiled. During her brief two years there, she quickly rose to become the most successful vendor. Within Kleinfeld, Tornai is the only designer to have her own boutique. Women from all over the world visited Tornai at her New York City boutique located inside Kleinfeld. Tornai considers it an honor to dress her brides for the most important day of their lives, and she takes great pride in doing so.

Tornai currently spends two weeks per month in New York City, where she holds monthly trunk shows and meets with clients to help them design their perfect wedding dresses.

She has had seamstresses on staff from the beginning, but she still has the final say on every dress. She spends a lot of time traveling to and checking in on her other stores, as well as making frequent trips to the New York City location. Her works are offered for sale in numerous countries, such as the USA, Canada, the Bahamas, Israel, Italy, Greece, Germany, Croatia, Angola, South Korea, and China.

Tornai says that when she travels to faraway places, she is able to “see things differently, as if I am experiencing them for the very first time,” and this provides her with a wealth of inspiration for her designs.

Tornai’s husband, David Levinshtein, handles the business side of things, while Kochav, Tornai’s sister, is the makeup artist and Tornai’s son handles the graphic design.

Retail

While she sleeps, Tornai designs beautiful dresses. Through the fabrics she uses and the styles she creates, she strives to bring out the “inner princess” in each bride. Once the designs are finished, the ultra-feminine wedding dresses are sewn by hand from fabrics imported from Europe. The figure-hugging corsets that have become a Tornai trademark are adorned with Swarovski crystals and other precious stones. Tornai’s garments are deemed “vixenish” by The New York Times. Her fascination with aesthetics can be traced back to an early age when she was exposed by her Moroccan mother and Egyptian father to elaborate cultural ceremonies and celebrations. Her passion for exquisite design led her to develop a collection of dresses, especially for devout Jewish and Muslim brides, and she has become a sought-after designer in these communities. For an Indian bride who wished to wear a traditional Indian dress, she sewed a one-of-a-kind red gown.

Numerous episodes of Say Yes to the Dress feature Tornai bending over backward to accommodate her clients’ wishes.

Pnina Tornai’s expanded product line now includes footwear, accessories, headpieces, jewelry, and fragrance, each of which is in keeping with the label’s haute couture ethos.

She has recently expanded into evening wear, and her designs include the kaftans that are so emblematic of her background.

Collections

Bridal fashion shows and bridal expos around the world are where the newest collections are unveiled. Wedding magazines also feature the outlines.

Shooting Tornai’s 2016 FW catwalk show in the parched desert highlighted the dire need for water in the region. This group of works is a tribute to water and the way it combines with other elements like wind and sand to generate new life and vitality. Waves breaking and puffing on the sand and the way the wind moves water are both sources of inspiration. In order to capture the enchantment of moving water, Tornai has combined water-like crystals, coral lace, wavy ruffles, and water-like pearls. Each dress’s particulars, from its billowing chiffons to its watery embellishments and coral-inspired lace, reflect the natural world’s cyclical rhythms. This new collection represents her determination to revitalize and strengthen the planet as we enter a new decade.

Gowns from Tornai’s 2012 collection were made of silk, satin, and lace, and were adorned with pearls and jewels. Pearls were used by Tornai because she remembered that both her mother and grandmother, who have since passed away, always wore them whenever they went out. A close friend comforted her after her mother’s death by likening her tears to pearls; this analogy inspired the subsequent jewelry line. The collection was inspired by a bride’s tears of joy, which are symbolic of “pearls of joy” for her special day.

The corsets, silk pantsuits, and spaghetti-strapped dresses with scalloped hemlines from Tornai’s 2008 bridal collection were all infused with floral designs. These lovely dresses were all designed with Édith Piaf’s “La Vie en rose” in mind.
