10 Best Work Boots for Landscaping | 2022 Guide

Landscaping is an art form. Landscapers have the job of transforming elements of nature just to achieve visual appeal. It’s a creative process that requires experience and craft.

Sadly, these professionals have a lot of issues with their work boots, such as:

  • Working all day on their feet using boots that don’t have the proper support features
  • Being exposed to a wide range of temperatures on the same day (cold mornings, hot afternoons, rainy days, etc…) puts a lot of stress in their work boots
  • Work boots manufactured with low-quality materials that don’t last more than a few months in the outdoors
  • Being exposed to getting their toes crushed by heavy falling objects such as heavy bricks, cement wheelbarrows, tools, etc…

All these issues require landscapers to choose work boots with lots of different features. To make things easier for these hard-working tradesmen I made sure to test and research lots of work boots to arrive at those that performed the best for the specific needs that landscapers have.

Must-have Features of the Best Work Boots for Landscaping

There is a list of features work boots must have to be considered suitable for landscaping. These are some of the most important ones:

Waterproof membrane

Exposing your work boots to constantly getting wet by the rain and dry by the blazing sun is something very common for landscapers. You never know how crazy the weather is going to be, the only thing for sure is that your work boots are going to pay all the consequences.

In that context, I’d recommend getting work boots with a quality waterproof membrane that’ll keep the landscaper’s feet dry when exposed to the rain but also will make the boots deal much better with the sudden change of temperatures occurring in the outdoors.

Mesh lining

Landscaping is a synonym of working outdoors, being extremely active, and sweating all over. One of the body parts that sweats the most is by far the feet, as they are isolated by socks and a pair of work boots on top of them.

Thus, getting work boots with good breathability features such as mesh linings with moisture wicking attributes is a perfect way to keep the feet dry when exposed to hot and humid summer days walking all day in wet grass.

Traction outsole

Nobody wants to slip and fall when walking on wet grass.

This is why I recommend landscapers to get work boots with proper slip-resistant outsoles as it’s the only way to get the guarantee they’re not going to fall face-first into the grass.

Pro tip: if the outsoles have directional lugs it will help them walk on muddy grass with almost perfect grip avoiding these types of accidents. So, be on the lookout for those!

Safety toes

The hazards of a landscaping work site are plentiful. I mean, landscapers work with heavy tools and machines such as:

  • lawn mowers
  • hedge clippers
  • weed whackers
  • bricks and Belgium blocks
  • dump trucks
  • etc…

All these things can, in one way or another, completely crush their toes. Thus, I recommend getting work boots with proper safety toes to isolate their toes from any falling objects that might generate nasty toe injuries. I mean, you don’t want to work knowing that your toes could be crushed at any time, right?

There are lot’s of safety toes you can choose from, but for the most part, the most famous ones are:

  • Steel toes
  • Composite toes
  • Alloy/aluminum toes

Any choice of safety toes would be good for landscapers. However, I’m all up for lightweight work boots, which is why I’d choose alloy or aluminum safety toes as they are the lightest.

Cushioned footbeds & shock-absorbing midsoles

Have you ever walked 10 hours straight on the grass without rest? Well, that’s what a landscaper does EVERY SINGLE DAY.

In that context, I recommend getting work boots with proper comfort features such as cushioned footbeds and shock-absorbing midsoles as this is the best way to make sure their feet are going to be properly cushioned. That way, one can forget about going home with excruciating feet pain.

How Did I Test the Best Work Boots for Landscaping?

Some people are curious about the process I follow to test and research work boots before recommending them. This is the specific process I’ve followed for the best work boots for landscapers:

Comfort Test

During this test, I made sure to walk all day long on both hard fields and soft wet grass to replicate what a landscaper does most of the day. To be honest, I walked on all types of terrains in the outdoors.

I paid close attention to how my feet felt at the end of the day after having spent 8 to 10 hours doing this. If my feet felt relaxed and without pain, I would select the boots for further testing.

Protection Test

In this test, I made sure to walk on all slippery surfaces in the outdoors, whether it’d be muddy fields or wet grass. The purpose was to see if the work boots being tested had proper slip-resistant outsoles to prevent slips and nastier injuries.

Additionally, I let heavy tools (hedge clippers) fall from safe heights to analyze if the work boots being tested provided enough toe-protection to keep them safe from getting crushed.

Durability Test

The durability test consisted of using each pair of work boots for consecutive months and stress test them in the outdoors. I’d work walking all day long in the fields demanding the most I could out of my work boots.

If the tested boots endured this usage while maintaining a “like-new” condition, then I would list them for my list of the best hot weather work boots for summer.
